When visiting North Wales, one must first start with the fabulous neighborhood pubs. The pub has been a staple of Welsh history with some pubs dating back to the 1500’s. They are not only known for beer, wine, and spirits but for the delectable cuisine as well. North of Wales has many great choices but we’ve chosen these 4 that we feel are worth going a little out of your way for. Each of these are vegetarian friendly, have vegan options and gluten-free options to choose from.
The Pen-Y-Bryn is a timeless pub that simply cannot be overlooked in your travels. Though not much to look at from the unassuming outside, inside it boasts a handsome character and antiques that charm with a crackling fire. The garden and terrace overlook a panoramic view of the ocean that cannot be overstated and food that delights all. The Two-Meat Sunday Roast is highly recommended by all who order this, but the impressive menu expands to those with a different palate as well. The friendly wait staff invites your return each visit.
With everything from light bites to a three-course lunch, The White Lion Inn beckons those who crave delicious food, excellent service, and a great pint of ale. The twisty, windy road to reach this pub, sitting adjacent to a lovely old church, is well worth the going out of your way to get to it. The family- run pub’s relaxed atmosphere makes dining easy with the children. Everyone finds a tasty treat on the menu ranging from lunchtime to mains to Sunday menus. This pub was recently awarded both the Food Awards Wales and Hospitality Award Regional winner in 2019. While there, tell the long time hosts Simon and Nina Cole hello for me!
One of the oldest surviving pubs in North Wales is The Black Boy Inn. A medieval inn pub, the oak beams whisper of a history circa 1522 within their walls. Their “field to fork” philosophy of serving as much food sourced directly from the suppliers around Anglesey and Gwynedd as possible allows for a more authentic Welsh dish. The food and service are always delightful and fun. A winner of the bronze awards for the best food in Wales, it’s a definite must-do on your pub tour.
Under the protective shadow of St Stephen’s Church with panoramic views of the hills and valleys awaits Dinorben Arms. This wonderful pub that has notorious Sunday Roasts and a dog-friendly bar, inside and outside. The staff is professional and friendly and I’m never disappointed in the atmosphere leading to great times at this classic Welsh pub. Extremely popular in the 80’s, this pub still deserves all the recognition. Highly recommended!
